Speech transmission between two intended users need to be protected when it enters an insecure mobile communication environment.

The challenge is to provide a mechanism by which custom encryption can be added to a standard mobile phone in a straightforward way, without revealing any internal details of the encryption to the mobile phone manufacturer or application developer. We have demonstrated a secure mechanism for voice conversations using a custom hardware encryption setup. The setup uses the open internet to transmit encrypted voice data. A prototype using FPGA’s and standard off-the-shelf components has been demonstrated.
